Type of Wheel*

Detailed Description

The "durometer" or "hardness" of the wheel is indicated by the number followed by an "a". The "a" is the type of scale that is used to determine the hardness or softness of a wheel. The lower the number the softer the wheel, the higher the number, the harder the wheel.

PROs and CONS:

Here are some things to consider...a softer wheel will be really grippy, but will roll a little slower. A harder wheel will roll really fast, but will lack somewhat in grip. Remember it is all personal preference, what works for someone else might not work for you. Also keep in mind that floor and surface conditions constantly change, due to weather, cleaning schedule, wear and tear, etc.  Buy a few different sets, or trade with a friend to see what works for you.

Wore all season on every floor!
Allie B. Back (Charm City Roller Girls) 4/7/2011 10:06 AM
Early last year, after my 1st full season playing, I gave myself a birthday present of new wheels - Creepers (90a) & Stalkers (94a). I wore the Creepers on my pushers to get extra grip and the Stalkers on the rest for speed. I got them in Slim, which meant I sacrificed some speed for maneuverability, but they were fantastic. Really helped me progress as a jammer. I wore them all year on sport court, wood, & polished concrete, and even got to try them out on the banked track in TX. If you want a versatile wheel that you don't have to change depending on the type of floor, these work great!

My new favorite wheel
Ovary-Z (Phoenix, AZ) 4/7/2011 8:36 AM
I got these wheels a month ago and they're the best in my entourage so far. I realized I was a fan of slim wheels early on in my derby career, when I switched over because I would hit my wide wheels against each other. As soon as I switched to fugitive slims I could utilize footwork a lot more. I wanted a harder wheel for the sport court at Wild West Showdown, so I got the heartless wheels in the chaser 92a (I was skating on all 88s). This is the perfect hardness for my petite stature on this type of floor, I can skate fast but I don't feel out of control. They feel a bit shorter than fugitive slims, and I like the rounded edges-it makes for a smoother ride. I don't think these wheels would be good on a slippery floor, even if I went softer. For that you're probably better off with an atom poison slim.

They Saved me at Regionals!

I'm a fan! I was wearing some zodiacs at Dorton arean (Carolina Roller Girls venue - concrete) and sliding all over the place. Picked up a set of these (in 86a), rolled around in them for a few laps, windexed them and then played a game in them. I find them very quick to break in. My only complaint is that they wear out really quickly if you are skating more than 2 days a week.

the heart of the matter
cruel whip (indianapolis, IN) 4/6/2011 5:31 PM
i've been through a lot of wheels in my short derby career, but heartless are the wheels i keep coming back to. the narrow width is perfect for my style of skating. and the variety of durometers and 4-pack option allows me to mix and match to find the perfect combination for any floor. the one thing i don't love about these wheels is they nylon hub, but i can't really blame heartless for my fat ass.

I purchased these in 86 and 88's as I primarily skate on polished concrete. Though i love the width of the wheel after a few times out they were already bald. This was a little bothersome because i had really just gotten used to them and they were pretty grippy. Once bald they definitely lost some of there bite. I continue to use them and they are not awful but no where near where they were the first few days. To be honest im a person who will skate a wheel till literally it falls apart and i will say they are holding up well it's been almost a year and there still going(I also skate with no toe stops so that means nothing but hockey stops and plow stops and i'm 180lbs if that gives you an idea of how hard i'm on my wheels). So i would definitely recommend these to someone looking for a durable wheel, but if its something grippy for a slippery track look elsewhere.
